On Life

Life is a river
Flowing through the eternity of time,
And the infinity of space.
At its headwaters are the infinite
     tributaries
Of the eternally occurring creation.
At its delta it pours the waters of its
     being
Into the ocean of ultimate reality.

This reality is the source of the
     creation,
It is the Creator, and the creation itself.
On and on the river flows,
Eternally renewed, eternally renewing.

Its waters are pure.
I kneel and drink, my thirst is
     quenched,
It is the Nectar of God.
I leap in, and am refreshed,
I am at one with God.

On Death

What last blessed gift,
What secret bliss,
Is this Death,
That God has granted
To all living things?

I want to be awake when I die.
I want to know, to experience,
That instant of transition.

I want to celebrate
Up to that final moment,
And at that moment rejoice, and think,
"For this I have been spared,"
Pronounce it done,
And move on.

-Theodore C. Clarke

Eden

We are all Adam.
We have all been put on this Earth
To tend the Garden of Eden.

To the extent
That we validate error,
And to the extent
That we validate ignorance,
And to the extent
That we validate
The knowledge of good and evil;

To that extent
Are we thrust out
Of the Garden.

-Theodore C. Clarke

A Realization

Life is
Throughout the universe.
It is in every stage of evolution.

There is life at its most fundamental
     stage,
Protein, amino acid.
There is intelligence equal to ours.
There is life vastly more advanced
     than ours.

Life on Earth is a point
In the universal spectrum of life;
Life on Earth is an idea,
An experiment . . .
But not all there is.
